Planning lessons for a retail brand activation

The Columbia and Charleston projects were part of 3J's work across seven Belk locations. These event photos show Nike shoe customization, including lettering, floral artwork and colorful accents, alongside the live customization station.

For a similar retail event, agree in advance on the merchandise, suitable surfaces, approved colors and design options. Shoes require a different workflow from a quick personalized trucker hat, so a hat production estimate should not be used as a promise of sneaker capacity.

Ask the store to identify where guests choose a design, where the artists work and where finished pieces are collected. Include a plan for protecting surrounding surfaces, keeping the work area clear and following the venue's equipment and ventilation requirements.

For multiple locations, coordinate merchandise delivery, sample approval, the design menu, local contacts and opening hours before each event. A shared brief helps each location deliver the same brand experience while allowing the artist team to adapt to the space.

Request a proposal that identifies artist staffing, customization hours, merchandise responsibilities, travel and any advance artwork preparation. 3J's can provide a W-9 and certificate of insurance on request. Staffing and final production expectations depend on the approved project.
